In the Fall of 2019, a partnership between the USI Nursing program, EVSC, and Ascension St. Vincent Evansville was formed to provide Stop the Bleed training to all students taking the Health Education course at EVSC schools. USI nursing students led and taught Stop the Bleed training along with CPR while being overseen by Ascension St. Vincent Evansville nurses. These courses have taken place every semester since in both the Fall and Spring sessions, and eventually expanded into courses being taught at Mater Dei and Memorial High Schools. The program is finishing up its fifth year of existence, and to date, the program has taught these life-saving techniques to 750-900 students each semester.

Thanks to support from Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Medical Executive Committee, the Foundation was able to honor a request to support the creation of Stop the Bleed kits. The kits include eight different tools like gauze, gloves, scissors, bandage tape and a step by step guide. Nearly 500 kits were recently assembled on February 16 to distribute to Mater Dei, Memorial, and all EVSC high schools.

We tell the students all of the time that ‘we hope you never have to use these skills, but in the event that you do, you’re going to have the training and knowledge that you will need to help someone.’ Now, through the generous donation from the Medical Executive Committee, we have been able to give them the supplies and equipment they will need should an emergency arise.
